Yunfu, a municipality with abundant natural resources, is situated in the mid-western part of Guangdong Province. It enjoys a favorable location bordering the Pearl River Delta to the east; the eastern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the west, and the Xijiang River to the north. Yunfu connects the Pearl River Delta and the Great South-Eastern China with National Highway 324 and the Sanshui-Maoming Railway, both traversing the territory and Yunfu Port at the Xijiang River.

Yunfu is one of the three major stone processing bases in China. With a history of over 200 years in the industry, the town has long been regarded as the Kingdom of Stone Materials There are more than 3800 large-scale stone producing plants in the city. The companies are located principally along National Highway 324 forming a unique facade of One-hundred-li (50 km) called the Stone Materials Corridor. The stone materials produced in Yunfu may be divided into 13 major series identified as red, yellow, green, gold, gray, and pinto; and into 23 categories including slab, column, ball, rounded slab, arc slab, stone line, fireplace, pattern, handrail, lamp shade, carving, miniscape, table and sandstone, among others, and there are more than 1000 varieties in total. With an annual output of 60 million sets (pieces), Yunfu ranks No 1 in the variety, production, sales of stone materials and second in export volume among the 13 stone materials bases in China. Yunfu has been granted recognition as the "Stone Materials Base Center of China" and the "Stone Materials Circulation and Demonstration Base of China".

There are currently over 100 stone processing machinery manufacturers in Yunfu capable of designing and producing more than 10 thousand sets of various stone processing machinery for sawing, cutting, milling and mining stone each year. The locally-produced machinery has achieved recognition within the industry but, because of rapid growth in the sector, the quantities cannot satisfy the growing demand for the machinery and accessories needed by the stone producers of Yunfu. Thus, most machinery has to be imported from elsewhere, creating a large market for domestic and overseas machinery manufacturers.

Yunfu is not only first in the area of R&D of artificial stone, but the town is also the largest production base of artificial stone in China. With the best quality and the biggest annual production volume the city was honored as "China's Capital of Artificial Stone" in the year 2007.
